News Release:

From L to R: Durham Rescue Mission CEO and Founders Dr. Ernie and Mrs. Gail Mills, North Carolina Council for Women Executive Director Gale Wilkins, Governor Pat McCrory
Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory and First Lady Ann McCrory hosted an open house at the Executive Mansion today for people who contributed to the Rescue Christmas Tree located in the Sun Room of the residence. The Tree is a part of three decorative themes used throughout the Executive Mansion this year to highlight the first lady's initiatives of supporting men, women and children in shelters, as well as military families and pet adoption.

Contributing to the Rescue Christmas Tree and attending today's open house were members of the North Carolina Council for Women, staff, volunteers and residents from the Durham Rescue Mission and representatives from various shelters located across North Carolina.

"Supporting men, women and children in shelters throughout our state who have overcome terrible situations like domestic violence, mental health and addiction is an issue close to the heart of me and the first lady," said Governor Pat McCrory. "Especially during the holidays, we encourage supporting shelters like the Durham Rescue Mission throughout North Carolina in any way possible."

First Lady Ann McCrory has been an advocate for the Durham Rescue Mission since entering office, visiting the shelter and hosting several events for residents at the Executive Mansion.

"I want to thank all of those who participated in creating this year's Rescue Christmas Tree," said First Lady Ann McCrory. "The courage and experiences of all those who contributed are helping to inspire and save others' lives."

In addition to the Rescue Christmas Tree and open house, the governor and first lady also hosted an open house for military families who helped decorate a military-themed tree and are hosting an open house on Saturday, December 19, to encourage donations to animal shelters.
