Tansey Topics: A Weekly Look At What's Happening at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Press Release:

College closes on adjacent property

The purchase of a 13.6-acre plot of land adjacent to Beaufort County Community College was finalized on Thursday, Aug. 27. The land, located to the east of BCCC's existing property, was purchased using funds provided by the BCCC Foundation and Beaufort County.

The addition will allow for two critical pieces of infrastructure needed for educational programs. A driving pad will be used for vehicle training by several BCCC programs, including law enforcement training, fire and rescue, and truck driving. Currently, there is nowhere in the county to complete the hands-on driving portion of those programs.

A burn tower for fire training will also be constructed, not quite on, but adjacent to the new land acquisition. That facility is expected to be completed by the end of the year, so that it can be used for BCCC's new Fire Academy, which began this fall and continues into early 2016.

Until the driving pad can be built, the existing farmland may be used by the college's agriculture programs.

"We want to use it for educational purposes as soon as possible," says BCCC President Dr. Barbara Tansey.

The BCCC Foundation paid a portion of the purchase cost out of its Mish fund, an unrestricted account that can be used to support the college at the discretion of the BCCC Foundation Board of Directors. The funds were donated by the estate of Harriett Heynen Mish in memory of W. Albert and Harriett Heynen Mish.

BCCC Speakers' Bureau

We are working to organize a BCCC Speakers' Bureau for our service area in order to share the talents and expertise of our employees and to bring more awareness of our programs to our constituents throughout Beaufort, Hyde, Tyrell and Washington counties. There are many organizations in our community who have regular speakers, and presentations are typically 15-20 minutes long. If you would like to submit a proposal, please write a brief summary (1-2 sentences) of your topic and email it to the President's Office. The deadline is Monday, Aug. 31. We will produce a brochure of available speaker topics, and when we receive a request, we will contact you to make arrangements with the individual or organization.

Faculty/Staff Kick-Off Meeting

The Fall 2015 Faculty/Staff Kick-Off Meeting was held at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 25 in the Building 8 Auditorium. Topics included an introduction of board members, the Foundation Golf Tournament, new communication techniques, maintenance projects, budget, new hires, SACS/COC QEP, and Con Ed service area expansions. "This is the best faculty and staff we've ever had," says Dr. Tansey. "We are the best little community college in eastern North Carolina, and we do that by having the most dedicated and caring faculty and staff."
