Cosmetology students, instructors give fresh cuts for Back-to-School | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

WASHINGTON, N.C. - Beaufort County Community College's cosmetology students and instructors clipped, trimmed and styled hair for Eastern Elementary students on Monday, Aug. 24 as part of a Cut-A-Thon organized by the Washington/Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce.

"This is part of our Bright Futures program, which tries to help meet the needs of Beaufort County students," says Special Events Coordinator Jeanne Niederhauser of the WBC Chamber.

Neiderhauser credits Katie Paul of Bardot, a Salon located in downtown Washington, with the idea.

BCCC Cosmetology students look on as Instructor Velma Worsley works during the Cut-A-Thon at Eastern Elementary.

"She wanted to do something to help out, and this is what she does," she says. "We knew we would have more kids than one person could handle, so we called the college, and they jumped right in."

BCCC's Lead Cosmetology Instructor, Velma Worsley, says the Cut-A-Thon was an opportunity for the program's students to get hands-on experience and to contribute to the community. This was the first Cut-A-Thon, but Neiderhauser says she hopes to continue the idea next year and expand it to include more schools.

Eastern Elementary student Mayrim Salinas shows her new haircut on Monday, August 24.
