Registration Under Way For BCCC Commercial Truck Driving School | Eastern North Carolina Now

Registration is under way for those interested in enrolling in the Commercial Truck Driver Training Program at Beaufort County Community College.

Night and online classes will begin Monday, Jan. 12, and are scheduled to continue for 16 weeks in the program that will train students to drive a tractor-trailer and help them obtain their Class-A Commercial Driver's License.

The program includes classroom instruction, driving range instruction and behind-the-wheel driving of a Class A combination vehicle. Students will gain experience driving during various hours of the day and night and will be road tested by BCCC's third party examiner. Training will also be available for obtaining a Class B passenger bus license.

It is operated by the Division of Continuing Education at BCCC.

Class will be 6 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through Monday, April 27, in Room 701 of Building 7 on the BCCC campus. An online version of the course will also be offered through Monday, April 27, with students performing course work on their own schedule. Driving practice will be held 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays on the BCCC campus and will include off-road vehicle control skills and road trips.

The cost of the program is $339.75 for the seated class and $344.75 for the online version of the class. This includes $180 for the CDL class, three initial road tests and a $40 fee for a random drug test, which must be paid upon registration. The online course also includes a $5 technology fee which must be paid at registration. Other costs include $119.75 for textbooks and other required materials such as log books and trainers. The price of the required textbook and other materials is subject to change by the publisher.

The fee for an additional road test, if needed, is $125.

A limited number of scholarships from the Golden LEAF Foundation and the State Employees Credit Union may be available. For more information about these scholarships, visit www.beaufortccc.edu/coned/contin.htm.

Funding assistance may also be available through the local NCWorks Center, formerly JobLink. In Beaufort County, interested persons may telephone 252-974-1820.

All students are required to have their Commercial Driving License permit, Department of Transportation health card and original drug test at the time of registration. Students interested in obtaining their Class B Passenger Bus License will also need to obtain that permit from the Division of Motor Vehicles before registering for the class.

Students will also be subjected to random drug screening throughout the course.

The program is also available to students who currently have their Class A Commercial Driver's License and need to update their training.

Students may register by calling (252) 940-6375 or in person in Building 8, Room 802 on the BCCC campus. BCCC accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover. Checks payable to Beaufort County Community College may be mailed to the attention of Eva Peartree, 5337 U.S. Highway 264 East, Washington, NC 27889.

The course will begin on the scheduled date and time pending sufficient student enrollment for the class. Otherwise, the course may be postponed or cancelled.

For more information about the class, interested persons can contact Justin Rose, special projects coordinator with BCCC's Division of Continuing Education, at 252-940-6262, or by email at justin.rose@beaufortccc.edu.
